The Project
The Westford Community Fields Committee is a broad coalition of people working towards the same goal – the construction of 3 multi-purpose artificial turf fields in Westford Massachusetts. Two of the fields would be on Nutting Road, part of the East Boston Camps parcel and the third field would be at Westford Academy (WA) on the current site of Alumni Stadium.
We believe that these fields are in the best interest of the youth and others who will benefit from them. Artificial turf fields are able to be used longer than natural turf fields; better for the environment (a key issue for the 2 on Nutting Road); and more economical than natural fields in the long run. The current fields in Westford are at full capacity and with the booming population of children in the town, we need more facilities as well as restoring some of the current ones.
If constructing new fields in this day and age, especially in New England, it makes sense to use artificial turf – hence the impetus for the 2 fields at Nutting Road. The WA Field is a great facility steeped in tradition, but despite the diligent work of the WA staff, it is in disrepair by the end of the season due to the demands of Football, Boys and Girls Soccer, and Marching Band in the Fall and Lacrosse, Track, and other events in the Spring.
